Sei Labs achieves a significant milestone with 5 gigagas throughput on a 40-node network, leveraging the Autobahn consensus protocol to enhance blockchain scalability.

Sei Labs has announced a breakthrough in blockchain scalability, achieving a 5 gigagas throughput in an internal devnet test. This milestone was reached using a 40-node network distributed across four regions, according to Sei.
Benchmark Results
The devnet test, which simulated real-world network conditions, demonstrated a sustained processing capacity of 5 gigagas. Conducted with nodes located in Singapore, Germany, Ohio, and Oregon, the test maintained a ~700ms finality and exhibited network resilience across the geographic distribution.
Autobahn Protocol Architecture
The Autobahn protocol underpins this achievement. It employs a hybridized architecture combining a DAG-inspired data dissemination layer and a partially synchronous BFT consensus layer. This design aims to reduce latency and enhance recovery from network asynchronies.
Autobahn separates asynchronous transaction dissemination from consensus. Validators broadcast blocks and collect proofs of availability, which are then referenced in a directed acyclic graph. The consensus phase, led by a rotating leader, finalizes these blocks via a 2-round PBFT-style protocol.
Key Innovations and Features
A standout innovation of Autobahn is its off-critical path data availability verification, which allows for rapid finalization by ensuring data availability before the consensus phase. This approach significantly reduces latency while maintaining high throughput and robust security.
Autobahn's modular design supports parallel block production and efficient data dissemination, enhancing both throughput and resilience. It also provides a fast-path optimization for ideal conditions, reducing message delays during consensus.
Future Directions
Sei Labs plans to delve deeper into the technical aspects of their work, exploring implementation details, optimizations, and comparisons with other protocols. The organization encourages developers and researchers to collaborate on advancing blockchain infrastructure scalability.
