Self Protocol Launches to Enhance Onchain Identity Verification
Self Protocol, a new identity verification system leveraging zero-knowledge proofs, has been launched by Self Labs, according to the Celo Foundation. This development follows Self Labs' acquisition of OpenPassport, a move aimed at enhancing privacy and scalability in the digital economy.
Innovative Identity Verification
Self Protocol addresses a critical challenge faced by projects launching on the blockchain: ensuring applications reach unique users while preserving privacy. Eric Nakagawa, CEO of Self Labs, emphasized the importance of verifiable identity credentials without compromising user data. The protocol's infrastructure provides solutions for privacy-preserving identity verification, crucial in the growing onchain economy.
Strategic Acquisition of OpenPassport
The acquisition of OpenPassport allows Self Labs to expand its capabilities in zero-knowledge (ZK) technology and identity solutions. Florent Tavernier, co-founder of OpenPassport and now co-founder of Self Labs, highlighted the shared mission to prevent bot-driven internet activities and restore trust in the digital economy.
Core Components and Applications
Self Protocol introduces two main components: Pass and Connect. The Pass system facilitates Sybil-resistant token distributions and attribute verification without exposing personal data. Connect simplifies digital transactions by linking phone numbers to wallet addresses, removing barriers to blockchain adoption.
Having undergone beta testing, Self Protocol has demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing duplicate claims while maintaining user privacy. Currently, over seven million users globally utilize Self Pass and Connect, with verified phone numbers serving as wallet addresses for stablecoin transactions.
Broad Applicability and Integration
The protocol supports essential functions for onchain projects, including privacy-preserving identity verification for token distributions, age and country verification, and combating AI agents. It also enables DeFi integrations by unlocking functionalities based on a user's location.
Self Protocol is available for immediate integration by developers and projects conducting airdrops. More information can be found on the Self Protocol website.
