Parasol, a subsidiary of Mysten Labs, is introducing a new dimension to trading card games by leveraging blockchain technology on the Sui platform. The initiative aims to combine the excitement of collectible card games with the benefits of blockchain-based NFTs, according to a report from the Sui Foundation.

Bringing Blockchain to the Trading Card Realm

Historically, trading card games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon have captivated audiences primarily through physical cards and Web2 platforms. However, Parasol is changing this narrative by introducing blockchain elements to these popular games, thus offering players verifiable rarity and true ownership of their collectibles.

The new game, Capybara Fusion, is an open-source project that allows players to engage in puzzle-solving to save a fictional world. This development is part of a broader strategy to showcase how Sui's infrastructure can support large-scale, engaging gaming experiences.

Revamping Code of Joker for the Digital Age

Parasol's acquisition by Mysten Labs has facilitated the redevelopment of the popular digital trading card game Code of Joker, originally launched by Sega in 2013. This game will now utilize Sui's dynamic NFT technology to enhance player interaction and ownership. Scheduled for release on iOS and Android, Code of Joker: Evolutions will be free-to-play, monetizing through trading cards.

Empowering Developers with Sui

Parasol aims to empower game developers by providing tools to integrate blockchain seamlessly into their projects. Through the Parasol platform, developers can create NFT collections and manage their distribution, enabling a no-code approach to asset creation.

In an effort to inspire the development community, Parasol has launched Capybara Fusion, a cooperative game where players work together to repair a virtual world. The game is fully open-source, allowing developers to adapt and build upon its framework using Sui's blockchain capabilities.

Why Sui Stands Out

According to Kai Chen, former CEO of Parasol and current head of the gaming division at Mysten, Sui's speed and object model are key differentiators. The platform's fast transaction processing and clear object model have made it a preferred choice for integrating blockchain in gaming, allowing for low-cost, high-performance experiences.

Additionally, Parasol is utilizing zkLogin to simplify the onboarding process for users unfamiliar with Web3, eliminating the need for wallet registration or private key management. This approach ensures that games remain accessible to a broad audience while gradually introducing advanced Web3 features.

Future Prospects

With its foundation firmly established, Parasol plans to expand its offerings, particularly in Asia where trading card games have a strong following. The company is working with major Japanese studios to integrate existing intellectual properties into the Parasol ecosystem, aiming for a global reach in the gaming industry.
