NVIDIA has announced the launch of the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT), a groundbreaking facility that hosts the ABCI-Q, the largest research supercomputer dedicated to quantum computing. This development is expected to drive significant advancements in the field, according to NVIDIA Newsroom.

Revolutionizing Quantum Computing

The ABCI-Q supercomputer aims to integrate quantum processors with AI supercomputers, addressing complex challenges across various sectors such as healthcare, energy, and finance. By facilitating quantum-GPU computing on a massive scale, NVIDIA's new system represents a significant step toward practical quantum systems.

Technical Specifications and Collaborations

The supercomputer, developed in collaboration with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), boasts 2,020 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. These are interconnected via the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking platform, which enhances the system's performance and scalability.

The ABCI-Q system also incorporates NVIDIA CUDA-Q™, an open-source hybrid computing platform designed to manage the hardware and software necessary for large-scale quantum computing applications. This integration is expected to accelerate the development of quantum error correction and applications, which are vital for the advancement of quantum supercomputers.

Collaboration with Industry Leaders

In addition to its technological capabilities, the ABCI-Q supercomputer features a superconducting qubit processor from Fujitsu, a neutral atom quantum processor from QuEra, and a photonic processor from OptQC. This integration allows for hybrid quantum-GPU workloads across various qubit modalities, enhancing the system's versatility.

Masahiro Horibe, deputy director of G-QuAT and AIST, emphasized the supercomputer's potential to help researchers tackle core challenges in quantum computing technologies and expedite the path to practical applications. The NVIDIA accelerated computing platform within ABCI-Q is poised to empower scientists in experimenting with systems that advance quantum computing.
