GitHub Copilot Plans to Deprecate Key AI Models by Summer 2025

Deprecation Timeline and Alternatives

The deprecation process will commence on July 7, 2025, when the OpenAI GPT-4.5 and o1 models will no longer be supported. Users are encouraged to transition to OpenAI GPT-4.1 and o3, respectively. Following this, the o3-mini model will be deprecated on July 18, 2025, with OpenAI o4-mini recommended as an alternative. The final model, GPT-4o, will be retired on August 6, 2025, with users advised to adopt GPT-4.1.

GitHub advises users to update their workflows and integrations to align with the supported models before the deprecation dates. Copilot Enterprise administrators are encouraged to ensure that access to alternative models is enabled through their model policies within Copilot settings. Verification of model availability can be done via individual Copilot settings, allowing users to see the model options in the Copilot Chat model selector on VS Code and GitHub's platform.
